Sleep more to lose weight

When comes to the word 'weight', CQ thinks it is one of the most dreaded word to be linked to most, if not all women on earth. LOL.

Losing weight or at least to shed some pounds off the body figure does require a lot of work, right? Many may have gone to slimming centers, going for diet and weight loss programs, crash dieting, working out at the gym with a personal trainer or even going on hunger pangs for days, weeks or even months. Results may vary with different people.

Anyway, few nights ago, CQ had read an article in a magazine that says "Lose 10lbs just by sleeping more." Sounds dubious, isn't it?

How is this possible? Well, it is said that studies have shown that people tend to weigh more if they sleep less. Meaning you are not resting enough.

So what exactly is the sleep-weight connection? Science says - not CQ - that sleep deprivation wreaks havoc on the hormones that control appetite, cravings and metobolism of fat. How not so cool.

Sleep more, eat less

  • Have you ever notice that you proabbly eat more when you are tired? When you are deprived of sleep, you have an increase in ghrelin (a 'go' hormone because it makes you want to eat more). You will then have a drop in leptin (the 'stop' hormone that tells you to stop when you are full).
  • When you are sleep-deprived, not only will you tend to eat more but also you want junkier food - a simple carbs food for quick energy. That is disastrous!

Sleep more, store less food
  • Now how does this explains? During sleep, your brain excretes a large amount of growth hormone which tells your body how to break down fat and fuel.
  • When your body is deprieved of deep sleep, extra calories will be stored up as fats because there isn't enough growth hormone to break it down. Therefore your body will take the shortest way and storing it away in your butt, thighs, belly or wherever you tend to put on weight.

Sleep more, have more energy
  • When you have enough rest, you will feel less tired. When you are less tired, you will have more energy. You will enjoy doing more rigourous activities than your usual veg out days.
  • Your perception as to whether exercise is hard or easy is directly affected by how sleep-deprived you are.

Are you ready - especially ladies - to conquer some hurdles in a simpler way to lose weight? You don't even have to change your diet and exercises. All you have to do is have a good eight hours of sleep at night. But remember - the minimum hours is 7.5 hours for weight loss ...more than that does not help you drop in more pounds.

Why not start the sleep-diet tonight. Here are some tips to help you along with the new habit..
  • Go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day.
  • Start a bedtime routine.
  • Watch your caffeine habits.
  • Experiment with exactly how much sleep you need.

Through personal experience about four years ago, when CQ left the workforce, CQ dropped 6kgs in three weeks! Yes! This could have been the little extra hours of sleep that CQ had - for not waking up so early in the morning. But now ...hmmm :p

Okay! CQ wants to try out this sleep-diet thing. Good luck if you are trying too :)

Too much too little

Have you ever wonder or give a serious thought as to how much sugar content comes within the food we eat??

You will be surprised if not shocked ...when you look at these pictures - that CQ got through a forwarded email. It may or may not be the exact measurement but you can take it as guidelines the amount of sugar that goes tagging along with the food that you eat.

Giving up any of the above?? Do some serious thinking now!

Good advice

Here's one good advice that CQ would like to share. It is a short information CQ got from an anonymous fan huhu ..yet it is useful in our daily life.

Since the festives season is just around the corner, this advice comes so handy and at the right time. Upon starting your car engine, air out your car before turning on the aircon. Open the windows after you enter your car.

According to research done by a U.C. , the car dashboard, sofa, air freshener will emit Benzene, a cancer causing toxin (carcinogen). In addition to causing cancer, it will poison your bones, causes anemia and reduces white blood cells. Prolonged exposure will cause leukemia, increasing the risk of cancer. It may also cause miscarriage and other health effects.

Acceptable Benezene level for indoors is 50 mg per sq. ft. A car parked indoors with all the windows closed will contain between 400-800 mg of Benezene. If the car is parked outdoors under the sun at a temperature above 60 degrees F, the Benezene level goes up to 2000-4000 mg, that is 40 times the acceptable level. The people inside the car will inevitably inhale an excess amount of the toxin.

It is recommended that you open the windows and door of your car to give time for the interior to air out before you enter. Benzene is a toxin that affects your kidney and liver, and is difficult for your body to expel.

p.s ~ some portions of the article have been edited by CQ due to its unforgiving grammar =)

Did you know ...

... what a good breakfast is supposed to be?

Well, it should meet four major criteria ~
1. Restore the energy spent in the last 24 hours.
2. Restore the building materials spent during the night.
3. Replenish the water stock.
4. Maintain the blood sugar level within the normal range and prevent insulin surge.

Maintaining a healthy and good breakfast will help to solve many unhealthy and unwanted problems. Disciplined with good breakfast will provide the body with all vital nutrients and water.

It will also provide energy from proteins and not from carbohydrates. Besides, when your food intake in the morning is correct, it does not raise or drop blood sugar level.

Good breakfast helps to cleanse the intestine, improve absorption of nutrients and maintain water balance during the day. So do start with healthy food. Do not eat easy and simple carbohydrates ~ like chocolate, sweet coffee, cookies, doughnuts, softdrinks, to overcome your morning hunger.

It will only raise your blood sugar level and free you of hunger and weakness. Each sugar “injection” is followed by the insulin surge. woowwww...no wonder that's one reason for developing diabetes.

Do not skip breakfast too. When your body wakes up “empty” in the morning, most of your body's 100 trillion cells beg you, “Hey, give me back all the nutrients, energy and water I spent in the last 24 hours”.

You may not feel hungry or thirsty in the morning, but it’s just a matter of time. So do have a good breakfast.

Would YOU ..

..sell one vital organ for a sum of almost $45K or maybe more, if you can negotiate well? Easy money to get in order to lead a comfortable life for some people, especially the poorest among all in the third world countries or even in few developing countries.

CQ had read an article, just days ago about a man who had sold 7.5 cm of his liver and got richer by S$44,600! And he thought he had sold his heart!! Yoohoooo man...if you really did sell part of your heart, you will be purged from the earth!

So! Why did some people sell their organs?? CQ knew that selling of organs is illegal in most countries. Yet, many desperados buyers and sellers are willing to go through any illegal transplant operations and that will definitely put innocent lives in gross danger.

There are a few cases where they would go to great lengths or even lie in regards to their relationship status so as to get approval for the legal transplant operations. CQ understands that you can donate your organs within immediate families or relatives? ...hmmm still there are few procedures that one has to go through ..like tests for blood type, compatibility and others.

Imagine this scenario ...an illegal liver transplant operation is being carried out in a filthy and unhygenic operating table.. in a dimmed light room ...then cutting the body parts is like carving a watermelon into an artful display! alamak! writing this imaginary scenario is making CQ puked lah! So you people imagine sendiri eh ...

CQ read that usually poor village people are being forced or duped into selling their healthy vital organs - like kidneys, liver and so on.

CQ wonders if these desperate people have ever consider what will happen after they have parted with one kidney or a % of their liver?? Will they remain as active as before the operations? Will there be any side effects??

CQ rests her case...it's too sensitive and complicated matter to think.

Grooming the nursing witches

One night Udin's wife woke Udin up who was in deep sleep.

Udin's wife: Honey, quick wake up.

Udin: iisssh.. what's it waking me up in the middle of the night?

Udin's wife: You had forgotten to take your medicine, quick get up, the doctor had reminded that you have to take them before going to bed.

Udin: What medicine?

Udin's wife: Sleeping pills.

Udin: @#%^#^????

Lols. Well, the medicine has got to do with CQ's next post. Read on ..

A few days ago, CQ accompanied someone to a clinic in Gadong. While waiting for our turn to be called up, CQ saw behind the counter, four female clinic assistants. As like any other days, CQ assumed they were busy with registrations, updating and so on. One of the ladies was wearing tudung while the other three were not.

What amused CQ was that the three ladies not in tudung were letting their hair in such messed-up or tangled-up or as if they had just woken up from bed and gone straight to work! CQ bet with you readers that even the 'Witches of Eastwick' could have lost the Oscars award to them huhu ..

Has grooming taken the back seat?? Though it is not an obliged requisite to be in uniforms, private clinic should however maintain their staffs' grooming standards. In medical contexts, personal grooming is the art of cleaning, grooming and hygiene practices which too, include dental, occupational, and public hygiene.

These clinic assistants were not even wearing any gloves when handling or proportioning patients' medicine! Oh my...you can see one of the assistants was touching her hair and then handled an earlier patient's medicine! Aren't clinics supposed to be an example of a public area where hygiene is strictly adhered??

CQ thinks, on CQ's next visit, CQ will definitely highlight the matter to the doctors - whom were well attired ...or maybe quiz those clinic assistants.. Aiyooohhhh

Reduce Salt

How to reduce salt in your daily diet? Here are nine tips that can followed ..

  1. When buying vegetables that are fresh, frozen or canned "with no salt added."
  2. Use fresh poultry, fish, and lean meat rather than canned or processed types.
  3. Use herbs, spices and salt-free seasoning blends in cooking and at the table.
  4. Cook rice, pasta and hot cereals without salt. Cut back on instant or flavored rice, pasta, and cereal mixes ...hmmm even indo-mie goreng ehh :)
  5. Choose convenience foods that are lower in sodium. Cut back on frozen dinners, packaged mixes, canned soups or broths and salad dressings. Well, CQ thinks that having these types of food occasionally should be alright ..yeah :)
  6. Rinse canned foods, such as tuna to remove some sodium ..hmmm CQ doubt anyone will follow this tip ..huhu
  7. Buy low-sodium or reduced-sodium or no-salt-added versions of foods. CQ knows some of you will go eeewwww lols
  8. Choose breakfast cereals that are lower in sodium.
  9. Snack on fruits and vegetables instead of chips. It is best to encourage young children to eat healthy snacks to maintain a good eating habit ..yeah? hmm

It is best to live a hyperactive and healthy life than living with hypertension the rest of your life!

Non-dieters haven ...

... if you are or thinking of losing pounds, then do not continue reading this post!

Or you may be asking 'Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle? hey! heLLO! 'Round' is shape! Be thankful enough if your shape is not Hexagon!!! huhu ..

Strictly for those who loves and enjoy cakes, desserts, finger food or sinfully delicious delicacies ..yet YOU can still stay healthy and maintain your precious well-endowed figure.

Remember this kitchen? Look at these cakes!! *drool* ..yooo yuhooo don't you let your saliva roll down the sides of your mouth while reading CQ's blog ok! lols...

CQ can't remember the names of these beautiful and tasty cakes ..you can check them out here.

This cake is a really for those who have sweet tooth. CQ likes the crunchiness of the pastry which compliments the yellow custard 'pureed' with passion fruit - see the seeds scattered on top?

It is so sweet that you are to enjoy with black coffee or cappucino - sitting on your patio or backyard garden ..or maybe serve them for high-tea with friends but don't forget to invite CQ lols ...

Such a darling cake! Bigboss loves this one ..it is not too sweet and has a soft sourish taste. Diabetics can enjoy but not tooo much!

The top layer has a meringue -like taste. The whitish colour must be the cream and the greenish layer is so nice. It has a nutty taste, which CQ thought must be almonds ...well CQ did not have time to checked it out - becoz gobbled it down too quickly and were too engrossed describing the taste to Bunny :))

hmmm these two pieces are for Bigboss and Kimchi ...CQ is so tempted to just eat them up! hehehe.

You can enjoy this lovely cake piece when sitting by the window and watch the world goes by and sipping your hot tea or coffee.

These apple pies have just been out from the oven ..phewww must been hot in there heheh. Can you see the 'window' effect?? that's the 'louvres' in apple pies ..huhu what is CQ talking about? Oh well, you will have no time to ask when you are eating these pies.

Snow of icing sugar as decor huhu ...these are great for high-teas or children's party as finger food.

Now this is more like sate style but instead of using the normal sate wooden sticks, Bunny had used lemon-grass stalks to hold the chicken patties wrapped around them.

The dip is sweet and has a spicy zing. It is best when eaten hot. Another creative idea that you can serve when hosting any events or functions at home.

p.s. CQ got approved 'visa' to post these exclusive pictures even b4 Bunny's Yummies does ..huhu

Rain rain go away ...

Lately it has been raining and some places are flooded - even on the double-carriage highways!

Wet season can be cool but at the same time it can be a nuisance like sending a welcome invitation to the buzzzzzing pesky mosquitoes to breed and to vampire-ing on human blood and sucking through the juicy veins. LOL.

Well, here is a tip shared by some kiasu ladies - the mosquito control technique! - that they got from a gardening forum.

Do not know how far this is true but there is no harm in trying it out. Instead of using the various brand of the poisonous agents like Ridsect or Baygon or Shelltox, this simple home tip does actually works.

Put some water in a white dinner plate and add a couple drops of Lemon Fresh Joy or any dishwashing liquid. Put the dish on your porch, patio, picnic table, park bench or other outdoor area.

Not sure what attracts the mosquitoes - the lemon smell, the white plate colour or what! But mosquitoes flock to it and drop dead shortly after drinking the dishwashing liquid mixture. It usually drops within 10 feet away from the plate. Maybe the mosquitoes thought it's a drinking party for them :)

Try it! It may seem trivial but it may also help to control mosquitoes around your home especially in areas where puddles of water can be seen. Do share this tip with anyone who likes sitting out in the evening or when they are having a cook out.

CQ will experiment on it soon ..but where? Mosquitoes hardly fly as high as three storeys high flat hehehe - CQ will sing the kiddy song 'rain, rain go away..' :)

coco + nuts = coconuts

Young coconuts are kelapa-kelapa muda - good for carb.

Mature coconuts are kelapa-kelapa tua - best for protein.

Coconuts can be used to enhance flavors. They are healthy nutrients to your diet. Coconuts are rich in lauric acid, which is known for being antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal and boosts the immune system.

Fresh coconut juice is one of the highest sources of electrolytes and can be used to prevent dehydration - for instance in cases of diarrhea or strenuous exercise, instead of drinking any sports drink.

In some remote areas of the world even use coconut juice intravenously, short-term, to help hydrate critically ill patients and in emergency situations ...hmmm a very interesting fact.

Other health benefits of coconuts and coconut oil which include helping to lose weight or maintain your already good weight; reduce the risk of heart disease; lower your cholesterol; improve conditions in those with diabetes and chronic fatigue and other digestive disorders; prevent other disease and routine illness; increase metabolism and promotes healthy thyroid function; boost your daily energy and to rejuvenate your skin and prevent wrinkles.

p/s: was wondering if mandi air kelapa, will we go nuts??

under the pokok kelapak, CQ will not wait for you ..huhu

Ancient age

This is awesomely interesting. A devout Muslim, Mariam Amash is thought to be the world's oldest woman alive at 120 years old. She was discovered by chance when she applied for her new identity card.

A Bedouin descent, she lives in the predominantly Arab town of Jisr az-Zarqa in Northern Israel.

According to her records, she was born during the Turkish Ottoman Empire period..hmmm an era where many forms of media like radio and television are scarce. How did she ever manage to stay healthy at this ripe ancient age?

Mariam Amash is said to be an active lady who rises as early as 5am, walks a lot without aid and attributes her exceptional longetivity to eating rich diet of vegetables ...WOW! A pious Muslim lady, Mariam Amash made her last pilgrimage to the Holy land of Mekah in 1990, making a total of five trips in her life.

An extraordinary aged lady who must have seen and gone through a lot of history in her time ...and possibly she could be a 'walking encyclopedia'!

Well, in my seventeen years in Brunei, I have met and seen many old aged people. Some do age gracefully while others aged either too abruptly due to illness or stressfulness of life.

But nothing really amaze me than this unidentified old woman (above picture). I have seen her walking along highways and roads that I have passed by. In my thoughts, she could be some one's wife, mother, friend or sister or a grandmother. She could be about 70 - 80 years old or maybe more than that.

She never fails to carry a bigger-than-her-size basket on her frail shoulders. She also has a worn out handbag. Everyday she would dressed in different set of soon-to-be-discarded kain sarongs, faded blouses and wears a scarf on her head. Her feet are protected by an old pair of cheap flip-flops and on rainy days, she carries an umbrella.

Once I did bump into her in a shop near my area. She was buying a box of mosquito coils and two packets of Hacks sweets. Smiling at me meekly, I could see her ancient face is full of wrinkles and creased folds and her skin are obviously tanned-sun-dried yet she is quite bubbly when she speaks ...in her thick Bruneian accent. She did amuse me with her fuss-free spirits and attitude.

For an old woman of her age, she definitely has an extraordinary amount of energy and stamina to have her daily morning walks to wherever her destination brings her (only God knows where) with a load on her back that some of our young people of Today's world could not even carry!

I believe, just like Maraim Amash, this petite and strong-willed old lady must have lived on rich diet of vegetables or 'ulam-ulaman'. wowwww...so People! eat lots of vegetables and do daily exercises to maintain that you-look-young looks when you are old and stay healthy.

Sweet corn - a nutrient in sweet corn can alleviates stress.

Apricots - it will help your eyes to focus.

Walnuts - its Omega-3 fatty acids help you to think clearly and stay focused.

Beware what you eat ..

We, human beings like to eat ...but sometimes we are ignorant or unaware what goes into our mouth. Some ingredients are disguised purposely to fool us ...here is something I want to share (as emailed to me by a friend from overseas) ...be your own judge.

These are wooden chopsticks ...

cut into small pieces ...

then the cut wooden chopsticks are put into a metal bowl of water ..

err must be salt ...

add bicarbonate soda or sugar?? ...hmmmm

then add flavoring colour ...

it is then boil ...hmmm till soft?

when cool, store in airtight bottle and put in the fridge ..

possibly 24hrs later or days later ..take it out..

waaaahhh ..what does it resembles? could be kway tiaw noodles?? or what???

it is then cooked up into fried noodles ...eeewwwwwww

wooden chopsticks turn into noodles???

This could have happened anywhere ...irresponsible food vendors or restaurant owners who want to make fast bucks or profits by using such crazy and illegal methods without taking into consideration the effects it may cause when consumed.

Therefore, beware what you eat at any eateries, cafes, restaurants or foodstalls (especially illegal ones), even though if you are very hungry ...prevention is better than cure.

Common health mistakes we do

Many of us ..including me often make little health mistakes that cause can damage to our bodies in the long run - simply because we are unaware of what we are doing is wrong.

Here are some of the most common mistakes that we have made...

Crossing our legs..
We tend to cross our legs at the knees when sitting. Although it may look elegant or lady-like way to sit, but sitting this way will cut down circulation to your legs. If you don't want varicose veins to mar the beauty of your legs (on the folds behind our knees) and compromise your health, uncross your legs every time you realise that you have one knee on top of the other. The best way to sit is to simply place both legs together on the floor, balancing your weight equally. If you feel like changing position, instead of crossing your legs, simply move both legs together to one side. As an alternative, you could also consider crossing your legs loosely at the ankles. It is a decent and elegant way to sit. It is far better for your legs and your health than sitting with your legs crossed at your knees.

Not changing our toothbrush..
How often do you change your toothbrush? Most of us wait until most of the bristles have either fallen off or blossomed into an ugliest bloom, or are in such bad shape that we would be embarrassed to pull out our brush in public. However, since not many of us need to pull out our brush in public, we carry on with our frayed one until we lose it. Replace your toothbrush often. Damaged bristles can harm the enamel and don't massage your gums well. Do it right. Imagine going through the annoyance of brushing your teeth twice a day only to find out that you're damaging your enamel every time you clean your teeth. Use a brush with soft bristles unless your dentist has advised otherwise.

Skipping breakfast..
Never ever skip breakfast. It is the most important meal of your day! Remember, when you wake up in the morning it must has been about 10-12 hours since your last meal. Your body needs food now, more than at any other time. Eat a heavy breakfast. You will then be busy through the day and the calories will get expended quickly. If you are trying to diet, eat a light dinner.

Sharing and being informed and making a few changes can help make us feel a whole lot better...

High heels..
High heels will surely make you look great, but they are the actual murderers for your back. However it doesn't mean you should steer clear of stilettos. Wear them, but not when you know you will be walking around a lot or for a whole solid day! Wear them when going out especially a dinner or any formal occassions. Avoid high heels when you are going somewhere on foot. If you are constantly tempted to wear your heels, take a good look at your flats. Is there something about them you dislike? Invest in a new pair of beautiful flats or pumps shoes with a low heel. Buy something you love, that you will enjoy wearing... If possible, get a matching bag. You will then enjoy your flats as much as you do your heels.

Sleeping on a soft bed..
You don't have to sleep on the floor to be kind to your back, but do make sure you have a firm mattress. Although a mattress on springs is soft and lovely to sink into, it is bad for your back. If you already have an old bed with springs, you don't need to invest in a new one - simply get a thick wooden plank put over the springs, and place the mattress on the plank. If your mattress is old and lumpy, throw it out and get a new one. Your neck and your back will thank you. The same rule applies to sofas...you buy the sofas, so it is meant to be sat on. If you will be spending hours on a sofa, get a firm yet comfortable one.

Pillows..
No matter how comfortable sleeping with ten cushions is, do have pity on your neck. Sleep with one pillow but make sure it is not too thick. If your pillow gets lumpy, discard it and go for a new one. Get a thin pillow if you sleep on your stomach, and something a little thicker if you sleep on your back, to give your neck adequate support...the kabu-kabu type is so nyamannn :)

Not exercising..
So all of us know we should exercise more but many of us don't. This is a health mistake we consciously often make! And why is that? Simply because we refuse to admit the damage we are causing to our bodies by not working out. A number of people only start working out once they have experienced a warning signal. Don't wait for a heart attack to strike before you decide to opt for a new lifestyle change. Make the change now. Prevention is better than cure... You don't need to work out like as if you are participating a marathon to be in top shape. Half an hour of brisk walking three to four times a week will make a world of difference to your health. If you haven not exercise for a week then you are making a mistake and will grow old faster at a speed of a lightning :D

Life is short. Break the rules. Forgive quickly. Kiss slowly. Love truly. Laugh uncontrollably and never regret anything that made you smile.

p/s: I'm not a health officer ...sharing is caring, when you care - you share :D

The Brain

Weighing only about 1.5kgs, the human brain has an enormous cerebral hemisphere. These are involved in thoughts and memory; some parts respond to signals from the sense organs to allow sight, hearing, feeling, speech and movement....

Therefore, our brain allow us to THINK! So don't go head-banging or get stressed up.

Live life without limits..

Something to share... reasons for sleeping and waking up early:

Evening at 9 - 11pm: is the time for eliminating unnecessary/toxic chemicals (detoxification) from the antibody system (lymph nodes). This time duration should be spent by relaxing or listening to music.

If during this time a housewife is still in an unrelaxed state such as washing the dishes or monitoring children doing their homework, this will have a negative impact on health.

Evening at 11pm - 1am: is the detoxification process in the liver and ideally should be done in a deep sleep state.

Early morning 1 - 3am: detoxification process in the gall, also ideally done in a deep sleep state.

Early morning 3 - 5am: detoxification in the lungs. Therefore there will sometimes be a severe cough for cough sufferers during this time.

Since the detoxification process had reached the respiratory tract, there is no need to take cough medicine so as not to interfere with toxin removal process.

Morning 5 - 7am: detoxification in the colon, you should empty your bowel.

Morning 7 - 9am: absorption of nutrients in the small intestine, you should be having breakfast at this time. Breakfast should be earlier - before 6:30am for those who are sick.

Breakfast before 7:30am is very beneficial to those wanting to stay fit. Those who always skip breakfast, they should change their habits, and it is still better to eat breakfast late until 9 - 10am rather than no meal at all.

Sleeping so late and waking up too late will disrupt the process of removing unnecessary chemicals.

Aside from that, midnight to 4:00 am is the time when the bone marrow produces blood. Therefore, have a good sleep and don't sleep late.

Take care and be responsible about your health!
