teacher & pupils

Long long long time ago, an expatriate teacher came over to Brunei for a teaching stint. She taught Nursery pupils at one of the private school in the capital. She does not speak Brunei language...

One the first day at school, she was full of excitement to teach her young charges of about twenty four-year old boys and girls. She taught Malay language. After introducing herself, she made them sit up front on the mat that she had brought. She then started with her pictorial lesson.

Teacher Salamah: Hari ini kita akan belajar nama-nama binatang (Today, we are going to learn names of animals) .

Pupils: yeeehhhhhhh.....

Teacher Salamah: Ini adalah gambar kucing. (This is a picture of a cat)

Pupils: Kucing (a cat)

Teacher Salamah: bagus....(clever/good). Yang ini gambar burung... (This is a bird)

Pupils: Burungggg (a bird)

Teacher Salamah: Ok...yang ini, pasti semua tahu ...anjing (Ok, this one, everyone knows...a dog)

Pupils: Salah cikguuu...itu kuyuk (wrong teacher, that is a dog ~ Kuyuk means dog in Brunei lanaguage)

Teacher Salamah: Huh? Kuyuk? Bukan...anjing lah (No, it's a dog)

Pupils: Kuyukkkkk

oohhhh thank goodness...no kuyuk around
